This Year's Christmas Tree
Tonight the sky is dark and it is getting much colder. Which is thrilling rather than unfortunate. The last couple of years winter pretty much skipped over us here in Massachusetts in all the ways that matter. We had no peaches. One year the Wisteria refused to bloom. Which was devastating. Those beautiful blooms and that fragrance was something we held our breath for every springs… So when they didn’t appear, we felt abandoned by the very essence of beauty itself.
But beauty takes so very many forms. Some of which we get to create. Today was busy…. The last of the thanksgiving mess was processed and cleared away. The house was decorated for the coming festival of lights that will arrive when we see the least light and need light the most. One thing we did was make the Douglas Fir, we picked up this year at another little local farm called Cordelia’s.
Cordelia’s has been one of my favorite local farms other than my own since I have come to live in this tiny little town. They give great advice have fair pricing, and offer so many wonderful things. I have learned quite a bit from just the odd conversation with the wonderful farmers there. Some years we get our tree from them.
This year, we named our tree Michael. We love Michael. We think he is the prettiest tree ever. We have decked him out most extravagantly. He is lit up and he glows with pride, because we have made him so glorious. We have given him many articles of beautiful decor, and he has given us a place to gather and enjoy some light, peace and time together. He has become part of our family here at Wildflower.
When Christmas is over, we will put away all our beautiful decorations. Many of them in my family for generations. They will go back to a box in the crawl space till next year when we acquire a new Christmas tree.
It was absolute joy today for all of us here at Wildflower, to gather round and decorate our tree. These little traditions mean so very much to us on cold nights when the night is darker than the one that preceded it.
I hope all of you are putting the lights in your windows.
I hope you too have a bright glowing focal point for the time when things get darker.
I hope you too get to create and bask in the beauty of a tree.
