The Night Club, is warm and bright. The blue sky is a shining cerulean jewel, it’s luscious brightness spills over everything. It fills every fiber of my being. I feel as if I must be glowing with the same light as it is, or like any moment the slight wind will lift me into the sky to soar through the blueness. Every thing in me is screaming of the coming spring. The moon spins her yarn in the sky at night and tells tales to the stars about the coming of the green which will burst from the earth when the lady of the spring arrives. The trees too sing with early buds for leaves that you can feel they are itching to release into their full green glory. Outside, there is even a lone single purple flower near to the forest. A harbinger of what is coming. Every year, this flower presents it’s bloom first to the glowing blue sky. Well before any other beautiful thing has come back after the long winter slumber. The air, is cool but not freezing, it makes the branches of the trees dance in celebration of the return of spring.

The greenhouse, has become a meaningful place once again. We are eating a little bit from it, even after this year’s huge set back from the death of the thermostat that killed most things at the coldest point of winter. I have started my spring garden, and while outside spring lives only as a whisper on the wind and the glow of the blue sky, in the greenhouse, I call The Night Club, it is in full swing. The Nightclub, has become a magical green space. Spring lives in the raised bed and in many containers set in different places so that they can grow to the fullest and most healthy. In the greenhouse, young life that will feed us, is thriving.

On days like today, the greenhouse is in my opinion, the most enchanting enchanted place in the house to spend time. A magical nexus where spring starts way ahead of schedule. Where you can sit, and enjoy a cup of coffee surrounded by growing things and the glowing blue sky. Or at night, you can have tea and look up through the roof at the dark sky dotted with constellations that constantly shift above. The new green life, watches the sky also, as if it too is waiting for spring when it can go outside to grow into the best that it can be. It is less lonely on the homestead this time of year as you look up at the sky with the other living things that call this place home. They await their permanent spot in the out door garden, but now they make amazing companions.

You feel like part of something as old as time…. Older than writing, older than antique houses. Older than electricity. Older than the hills and glaciers. Thousands of years old. You are part of the earth itself and it’s natural rythms, out there in the Night Club. You are the force of spring itself for that little room, now full of green growing things. You are part of a tradition as old as farming. You have a place in both time and space that is uniquely yours. You have a purpose greater than yourself, and an impact that serves the world.

There is an unbelievable pull… Almost like that of love, an inexplicable compulsion…. It drags you out into the greenhouse on days like today. You simply can’t be anywhere else. Soon enough that pull will shift to the garden outside. But right now, you can feel the plants calling. They need your attention. And the sky wants to watch from up above as you care for the living things you are preparing as your gifts to spring time, when it arrives. This is a sacred tradition to be part of. Being a homesteader, is to be part of the cycles of nature. To contribute to them, and to enhance their greatness in ways they simply can’t do all by themselves.

While you enhance nature, nature, enhances you. It brings out the best in you. It challenges you. It forces you to grow much as the growing things in the greenhouse grow on a day like today. This is my favorite time to be out in my greenhouse, when the sun is high, and the plants are thriving.

As time passes and all these living things move outside, I will still enjoy tea or a snack out in the greenhouse. During the summer, we will get thunder storm season. The lightning bugs from the edge of the woods at dusk, will dance with the flashing storm lights. We will be out there to enjoy the light show. Better than any tv series ever made. In the winter, we will be out there as the snow blankets everything. In the autumn, I will be planting the raised beds full of winter eats, while the leaves turn beautiful colors all around me. There is always something showing at the Night Club theater, and I get to not only watch, but participate.
This is one of my favorite times of year here at Wildflower.
Thank you for joining me for it.
